The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, made the clarification while briefing journalists at the Government House in Umuahia on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu said the government would not be pressured into banning Keke operations when there was no compelling reason for such a decision.
According to him, the administration is instead focused on streamlining the operations of commercial vehicles and tricycles to create a cleaner and more efficient transport system.
He said the measures were also aimed at reducing traffic congestion, particularly in major urban centres across the state.
The commissioner acknowledged that the number of Keke operators in Abia had increased following restrictions placed on their operations in some neighbouring states.
However, he stressed that banning tricycles was not part of the state government’s plans.
Kanu’s statement is expected to put to rest recent reports and speculation surrounding the possible restriction of Keke operations in Abia.
