One person has been confirmed dead after a two-storey building undergoing manual demolition partially collapsed in the Aboru area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, September 10, 2026.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it received a distress call from the scene at about 12:45am and immediately deployed its Alpha Eagle Response Team from the Cappa, Oshodi unit.
According to the agency, preliminary investigations indicated that the structure collapsed while manual demolition work was being carried out, trapping several workers beneath the debris.
LASEMA said a coordinated search and rescue operation involving its personnel, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) led to the rescue of two adult males.
The survivors were reportedly extricated alive from the rubble and given life-saving first aid by LASAMBUS personnel at the scene before being taken to a nearby health facility for further medical evaluation.
“Sadly, one adult male was recovered dead from beneath the collapsed structure,” LASEMA said in a statement.
The agency added that security agencies and community leaders were working alongside emergency responders to ensure unhindered access to the site and facilitate a safe conclusion to the operation.
The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to strengthening emergency response capacity through the decentralisation of response units and provision of additional equipment, with the aim of maintaining a 10-minute emergency response time across the state.
