Nwifuru issued the warning on Tuesday, 1 September, while inaugurating the newly elected chairmen and vice chairmen of the state’s 13 local government areas.
Speaking in Abakaliki, the governor said any chairman who failed to secure victory for the APC in their council would be removed from office and replaced by a councillor.
“Any chairman who fails to win his council will be removed from office and replaced with a councillor,” Nwifuru said.
The governor said he wanted the warning to be widely reported, stressing that politicians should not make such declarations behind closed doors.
“I want this information to be on the headlines of newspapers because, as politicians, we would not speak in secret,” he said.
Nwifuru told the council chairmen that the APC was expected to win Ebonyi State in 2027 and warned them against allowing opposition parties to gain ground in their respective areas.
He urged the chairmen to ensure the APC secures a 100 per cent victory across the state, reminding them that “charity begins from home”.
Governor cautions vice chairmen against rivalry
The governor also urged the newly inaugurated vice chairmen to work closely with their respective chairmen and avoid unnecessary rivalry.
He compared the position of a vice chairman to a “spare tyre inside the car boot”, saying they should only take over when the chairman was unable to continue in office.
“You should always be available to the chairmen and ask them of your councils’ daily activities,” Nwifuru said.
He also cautioned the vice chairmen against allowing gossip or bad advice from friends to damage their relationship with their chairmen.
“Do not listen to gossip and ill advice from your friends against your chairmen because that will destroy your relationship with them,” he added.
Nwifuru cites deputy as example
The governor used his deputy as an example of how political office holders can rise through effective performance.
According to Nwifuru, his deputy had previously served as a local government chairman and demonstrated the capacity that eventually positioned her for the role of deputy governor.
“She performed in ways people saw her and believe she could do the work of a deputy governor,” he said.
Nwifuru added that his deputy was currently performing her duties effectively and “enjoying the position”.
