Veteran Nollywood actor and one of the most respected figures in Nigeria’s film industry, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, will be laid to rest in Lagos on Friday, October 2, following his death on September 16.
The family of the late actor announced the burial arrangements on
Tuesday, stating that a funeral service would be held at 10am at This Present
House Church on Freedom Way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos. The service will be followed
by a private burial.
The family’s decision to hold a private burial will bring the formal
farewell to Jacobs to a close after decades of prominence in Nigerian theatre,
television and film.
A Night of Tributes in honour of the late actor is scheduled for
Wednesday, September 30, at 4pm at the Glover Memorial Hall, 19 Marinho Road,
Lagos Island.
The event is expected to bring together Jacobs’ colleagues,
contemporaries, mentees, friends and admirers, as well as associates from
Nigeria and abroad, to celebrate his life and contribution to the entertainment
industry.
Career and family legacy
Jacobs, a recipient of the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic,
MFR, was born on July 11, 1942. He quietly marked his 84th birthday with his
immediate family before his death.
The veteran actor was married to fellow actress Joke Silva in 1989.
Their marriage produced three children, Olusoji, Olugbenga and Dayo. The couple
became one of the most recognised families in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
This Present House Church, where the funeral service will be held, is an
affiliate of Church On The Rocks. The congregation was formerly pastored by
filmmaker and medical doctor, Dr Tony Rapu, before Pastor Jude Ehioghe became
the lead pastor.
Tributes expected from industry figures
Contemporaries and mentees of Jacobs, as well as friends and associates
from Nigeria’s film industry and abroad, are expected to attend the Night of
Tributes.
His extensive connections within the British and Hollywood film
communities are also expected to draw international personalities to Lagos as
the industry prepares to honour the late actor.
Silva, who was born on September 29, 1961, is expected to mark her 65th
birthday privately with her three children at the family’s Lagos residence,
shortly before the burial of her husband.
Jacobs’ death has continued to generate tributes from members of the
creative industry and admirers, with many reflecting on his decades-long career
and influence on successive generations of Nigerian actors.
