The closure will commence on Monday, September 7, 2026, and is expected to last until Monday, September 21.
The ministry’s Anambra State Field Headquarters disclosed this in a statement signed by the State Controller, Timothy Emenike, following an inspection of the bridge by the Minister of Works, David Umahi.
Umahi had visited the bridge last week after reports of vandalism, including the theft of bolts and iron rods by suspected scavengers.
The ministry said the bridge had developed deteriorated sections, particularly along the carriageway surface, while some components had also been affected by vandalism.
According to the statement, the affected areas include portions of the expansion joint steelworks and stanchion/steel truss nuts and bolts.
Following his inspection, Umahi directed the immediate commencement of emergency maintenance works to restore the bridge to a safe and motorable condition.
Messrs SKECC, the contractor handling the Km 0+000 to Km 20+000 section of the Onitsha-Enugu Dual Carriageway, has been directed to carry out the intervention.
During the two-week closure, motorists and other road users have been advised to use the Second Niger Bridge route through Obosi towards Asaba, Delta State, and other destinations.
The ministry said appropriate traffic diversion arrangements, road signs, safety barriers and traffic-control personnel would be deployed to manage movement and protect road users and construction workers.
The repair works will include the milling and removal of the deteriorated asphalt surface, followed by the laying of approximately 40mm of asphalt wearing course, alongside other maintenance and safety works.
The ministry also announced plans to install solar-powered streetlights and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on the bridge to improve visibility and monitor vandalism.
It said traffic-control and diversion measures would also be deployed to improve safety and reduce traffic difficulties around the First Niger Bridge axis.
The ministry said the rehabilitation work would be carried out day and night to ensure its speedy completion.
It appealed to motorists and businesses affected by the closure to bear with the inconvenience, assuring road users that the intervention was aimed at strengthening the integrity of the bridge and improving safety.
