The 33-year-old defender, who plays for Qatar Stars League side Al-Ahli, announced his conversion after reciting the two testimonies of faith, according to Qatari newspaper Al-Arab.
A video of Troost-Ekong reciting the Shahadah has also circulated on social media. Islamic scholar Dr Muhammad Salah shared footage of the former Nigeria international reciting the testimonies of faith.
Other reports said Troost-Ekong expressed a desire to read more and learn about Islam following his conversion. However, neither the defender nor his representatives had publicly disclosed what influenced his decision at the time of the reports.
Troost-Ekong joined Al-Ahli in January 2026 after his spell in Saudi Arabia. He had moved to the Gulf region in 2024 and subsequently continued his career in Qatar.
At international level, Troost-Ekong represented Nigeria between 2015 and 2025, earning 83 caps and scoring eight goals.
He was a key member of the Super Eagles squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire. He scored three goals during the tournament and was named Player of the Tournament.
The defender also represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup and Olympic Games before announcing his retirement from international football in December 2025.
His reported conversion comes as he continues his professional career with Al-Ahli in Qatar.
