A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Buba Galadima, has said only God and President Bola Tinubu know what will happen in the 2027 presidential election.
Galadima made the comment on Thursday while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he discussed the NDC’s preparations for the election and the presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Speaking about the prospects of a free and fair election, Galadima expressed concerns over recent developments involving opposition politicians and their supporters.
“Only God and Tinubu knows what will happen in this election,” he said, while alleging that opposition figures had been subjected to coordinated attacks.
Despite his concerns, Galadima expressed confidence in the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket, saying the two politicians would win if the election was conducted freely, fairly and transparently.
“Peter Obi and Kwankwaso will win this election if it is free, fair, and credible unless there is someone with a machinery willing to take it away from them,” he said.
Galadima also dismissed concerns about possible differences between Obi and Kwankwaso, saying the two politicians remained close and were working towards a common political agenda.
He said the party was working to harmonise areas of difference between the two men, who contested the 2023 presidential election on separate platforms.
According to Galadima, Obi and Kwankwaso complement each other because of their different political experiences and knowledge of their respective regions.
“Obi and Kwankwaso complement each other in every move. We are running a single ticket; that is why we call this ticket a healing ticket,” he said.
He described the ticket as one intended to represent the entire country, rather than being divided between supporters of the two politicians.
“We are running a single ticket; that is why we call this ticket a healing ticket for Nigeria,” he said.
Galadima also addressed concerns over the ticket’s appeal in the North, particularly with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar contesting the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the African Democratic Congress.
He maintained that the NDC was presenting Obi and Kwankwaso as a national ticket, saying the two politicians had the experience and political base to work together.
The NDC chieftain further questioned promises by politicians to restore fuel subsidy, arguing that voters should examine their previous positions on subsidy and reforms in the petroleum sector before accepting such claims.
“If someone tells you I will restore subsidy, will you just believe him without looking at his background?” Galadima asked.
He also criticised the current government’s description of certain spending as energy security expenses, alleging that such payments amounted to subsidies.
Galadima’s comments come as political parties and candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with INEC having confirmed the presidential field for the poll.
