The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 2, in the Patey area of Lagos Island.
According to eyewitnesses, Basit was driving when his vehicle allegedly struck a male resident who was attempting to cross the road.
Rather than stop to assist the victim, Basit allegedly drove away from the scene.
The incident reportedly angered residents, who pursued the vehicle and eventually caught up with him.
Eyewitnesses claimed that an aggrieved group of residents allegedly attacked Basit and inflicted serious injuries on his head, leaving him unconscious.
He was subsequently taken away for medical attention but reportedly died from the injuries sustained in the attack.
Basit was said to have been making preparations for his wedding, which was scheduled to take place later this month, before the incident occurred.
The Lagos State Police Command had yet to officially comment on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
The circumstances surrounding Basit’s death remain subject to police investigation, including the alleged hit-and-run and the subsequent assault by residents.
