Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Muhammad Matawalle, has arrived in São Tomé to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the inauguration of São Tomé and Príncipe President Carlos Manuel Vila Nova for a second five-year term.
Vila Nova is expected to take the oath of office on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at the National Assembly in São Tomé following his victory in the presidential election held on July 19, 2026.
Matawalle’s presence at the ceremony reflects the close diplomatic ties between Nigeria and São Tomé and Príncipe, as well as Nigeria’s interest in strengthening democratic governance, peace and security within the Gulf of Guinea region.
The Minister of State for Defence is expected to convey Tinubu’s goodwill message to Vila Nova on behalf of the Nigerian President.
During his visit, Matawalle is also expected to hold discussions with officials of the São Toméan government on matters of mutual interest. Defence cooperation and regional security are expected to form part of the discussions.
The Federal Government said Nigeria’s participation in the inauguration was part of its continued support for democratic governance and regional stability in the Gulf of Guinea.
Nigeria and São Tomé and Príncipe have maintained diplomatic relations and cooperated in areas including democracy, economic development, defence and maritime security.
