Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 25-year-old newlywed businessman, Lovely Chukwulobelu, at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA), Enugu, for allegedly attempting to traffic 72 wraps of cocaine to Portugal.
Chukwulobelu was intercepted by NDLEA officers at the departure hall of the airport on Thursday, September 25, while allegedly attempting to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Portugal via Addis Ababa.
The suspect, who had recently married, was reportedly found to have ingested the cocaine and was placed under excretion observation by NDLEA operatives.
He subsequently egested a total of 72 wraps of the Class A drug.
The NDLEA said the suspect had his wedding ring on his finger when he was intercepted at the airport.
During questioning, Chukwulobelu reportedly told investigators that he was previously involved in car decoration business at the Trade Fair Complex in the Ojo area of Lagos before relocating to Portugal in May 2023.
He said he recently returned to Nigeria and got married on September 13, 2026.
According to the suspect, he became involved in the alleged drug trafficking in an attempt to offset expenses incurred during his wedding.
The NDLEA is expected to conduct further investigations into the alleged trafficking attempt and identify other individuals who may have been involved in the operation.
