Nigerian Army Opens Investigation Into Alleged Sexual Abuse Involving Serving Captain.

The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into reports alleging sexual abuse involving a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, attached to Headquarters 3 Division, Jos.

Essien has been accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl who is deaf and non-speaking, allegedly impregnating her and fathering a child with her while she was reportedly living under his family’s care in Taraba State.

SaharaReporters had reported that the girl is the younger step-sister of Essien’s wife, Blessing Essien.

Reacting to the allegation, the Nigerian Army, in a statement issued on Saturday, September 12, said it takes allegations of sexual abuse, particularly those involving minors and vulnerable persons, with utmost seriousness.

The Army said appropriate steps had been initiated to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the reported incident.

It added that because the allegation is still under investigation, it would be inappropriate to make definitive comments on the culpability of any individual at this stage.

The military also said it was aware that relevant civil authorities were investigating the matter and pledged to cooperate fully with them.

According to the Army, the investigation will be conducted thoroughly and transparently in line with existing laws and regulations.

The allegation against the officer remains unproven pending the conclusion of the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings.
