Obi made the statement on Thursday, September 24, during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he discussed electoral integrity, opposition politics and democratic governance ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The former Anambra State governor said his administration would take a firm position against electoral malpractice, regardless of the number of votes involved.
“I’ve said it, and I’ll say it again: if I am the serving president of this country, whoever rigs elections will be in jail. Even for one vote, you will be in jail,” Obi said.
He also promised that political parties, including opposition parties, would not be harassed under his administration.
According to Obi, opposition parties would be given opportunities to participate in decisions affecting the country as part of his proposed approach to democratic governance.
He further said opposition members would be involved in government decisions whenever the president travelled outside the country.
Obi also criticised what he described as restrictions on his campaign activities in some states, arguing that presidential candidates should be allowed to campaign freely irrespective of their political affiliations.
He said all political actors should be given equal opportunity to present their programmes and engage voters ahead of the 2027 election.
Obi's comments come as political parties and presidential candidates intensify preparations and campaigns ahead of the 2027 general election.
