The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Plateau State University, has suspended its strike action following an agreement reached with the Plateau State Government on the union’s six-point charter of demands.
The decision was taken on Tuesday at an Emergency Congress Meeting of the union held in Jos, the state capital, after Congress reviewed the issues that led to the declaration of the strike on August 26, 2026.
In a statement signed by the Chairperson of the university’s union chapter, Dr Vincent Choji, and Secretary, Dr Lomka Iliya Kopdiya, the parties reached a “reasonable conclusion,” which includes the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme and full implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement and payment of arrears with effect from January 2026, among others.
The union said, “The suspension followed an agreement reached between the negotiation teams of the State Government and the union.
“The government’s team was headed by the Head of Service, Mr Steven Pam Gadong, while the Union’s team was headed by the Zonal Coordinator, Prof Aku Timothy Namo. The meeting took place at the Conference Hall of the Head of Service.
“The parties have reached a reasonable conclusion on the six-point charter of demands, which include the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme and full implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement and payment of arrears with effect from January 2026.”
“Other agreements reached between both parties include the provision of safe and secure staff quarters, construction of trenches around the perimeter fence, cessation of the intimidation of union leaders, as contained in the letter to Congress dated 18th May, 2026, through the Registrar, as well as payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25 per cent/35 per cent wage award.”
According to the statement, the Congress agreed that the strike be suspended, “with effect from 12 midnight, 16th September, 2026.
“By this development, members of the union are hereby directed to resume all academic activities. The union appreciates the public for their understanding and support.”
On August 26, 2026, ASUU-PLASU declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike over what it described as the failure of the university administration to satisfactorily address its six-point charter of demands.
The union announced the industrial action after its Congress meeting, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university administration on August 11.
