A branch manager of Polaris Bank, identified as Ossy, has been killed by suspected kidnappers during an attack at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), in Imo State.
The incident happened on Sunday, September 6, 2026, when the banker, who was based in Owerri, reportedly went to the university to drop off his children, who are students of the institution.
The gunmen allegedly confronted the bank manager within the university premises. He was shot dead during the attack, while his children managed to escape from the scene.
Two female students of FUTO were also reportedly abducted by the attackers, who fled the area after the incident.
Polaris Bank, while reacting to the death, described the incident as tragic and condoled with the deceased manager’s family, friends, colleagues and loved ones.
The bank said the matter had been handed over to the relevant security agencies for investigation and called for patience while the authorities work to establish what happened.
FUTO also confirmed the attack, stating that a visitor to the university was fatally shot during the incident. The institution further disclosed that two female students were taken away by the attackers.
The university said security agencies were investigating the incident and that its management was working with the authorities to secure the safe recovery of the abducted students.
Following the attack, FUTO management met with the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, on Monday to discuss security concerns around the institution and surrounding communities.
The police commissioner reportedly assured the university management that security operations would be strengthened around FUTO and nearby areas, including Ihiagwa, Eziobodo, Obinze and Nekede.
The university also appealed to students and other members of its community to remain calm and alert. Students were advised to avoid unnecessary movements and report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
A planned protest by some students over the killing was reportedly cancelled after the university restated its ban on unruly gatherings following examinations.
FUTO had previously prohibited rowdy celebrations and other disorderly activities after examinations because of concerns over damage to university property and disruption of public order.
The university management again warned students against public revelry, blocking roads or entrances, littering, damaging property and other activities that could create security problems within the institution and its host communities.
As of the time of the report, the police had not announced any arrest in connection with the killing and abduction.
