The warning was contained in a police wireless message dated September 13, 2026, obtained by SaharaReporters and issued by the Force Department of Operations in Abuja.
The message was circulated to police formations and Commissioners of Police across the country, with authorities directed to strengthen security measures in areas considered vulnerable to attacks.
The police identified parts of the North-East, North-West, North-Central and South-West as areas of concern.
According to the intelligence report, armed elements were reportedly moving from Katsina through Kaduna towards Plateau State, while suspected Islamic State West Africa Province operatives and their local collaborators were allegedly conducting surveillance around possible targets.
The police said educational institutions were of particular concern because the suspected attacks could take place around the resumption of the 2026/2027 academic session.
The concentration of students and staff during the period could, according to the security assessment, provide an opportunity for attackers to cause mass casualties.
The Force also raised concerns that terrorists could attempt to carry out attacks ahead of the 2027 general elections as part of efforts to destabilise communities, create fear and disrupt normal activities.
Following the warning, police commanders nationwide were ordered to increase surveillance and patrols around vulnerable locations.
They were also directed to strengthen stop-and-search operations, access control and rapid-response arrangements to ensure security agencies can respond quickly to any emerging threat.
Commissioners of Police were further instructed to tighten security at state borders, entry and exit routes and other critical approaches that could be used by suspected attackers or armed groups.
The police also directed commands to work closely with other security agencies, school authorities, religious leaders and the National Youth Service Corps management.
The collaboration is expected to improve intelligence sharing and establish early-warning systems capable of detecting and responding to potential threats before they escalate.
Commands were also instructed to immediately report credible threats and security incidents to the Inspector-General of Police and the Force Department of Operations.
The Force ordered all formations to comply strictly with the directives as security agencies intensify efforts to prevent possible attacks across the country.
