Operatives of the Kaduna State Police Command have arrested a man, Manaseh Bitrus Jatau, in connection with the death of his girlfriend, 35-year-old Rebecca Ojonike Jeremiah, in Kaduna.
The command received a report on September 5 that the lifeless body of Jeremiah had been found along Mai Angwa Street, Romi, with cotton wool stuffed in her nose.
Following the report, detectives from the Romi Outstation visited the scene and took the woman to St Gerald Hospital, Kakuri, Kaduna, where she was pronounced dead by a medical doctor. Her remains were subsequently deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Jatau was the last person to have contacted the deceased, after allegedly inviting her to meet him at Ebano Joint in Romi.
The suspect was later traced to his workplace at the Tomato Jos Company in the Maraban Jos area of Kaduna, where he was arrested.
During interrogation, police said Jatau confessed to having a fight with the deceased in his room following a phone call from another woman. He allegedly told investigators that the confrontation resulted in her death.
The suspect further confessed to dumping the deceased’s body in an open field close to his residence in an attempt to conceal the incident.
Confirming the arrest, the Kaduna State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, said the suspect remained in police custody while investigations continued.
Hassan added that the case would be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigation.
