“Now, 30 years later, we’re going to ask you to finally hold Duane Davis accountable,” prosecutors told the jury during closing arguments.
Davis’ lawyers have challenged statements attributed to their client, arguing that they should not be treated as evidence of his involvement in the 1996 killing.
During the defence’s closing argument, attorney Michael Sanft told jurors that Davis’ statements were an example of “braggadocio” intended to make money rather than an admission of the truth.
Sanft also highlighted what he said was a lack of physical evidence placing Davis inside the Cadillac from which the gunman allegedly opened fire.
The defence has maintained that Davis’ claims were unreliable, noting that he had not previously been charged in connection with the killing.
Earlier in the trial, Sanft argued that law enforcement officials had known Davis was “full of crap”, suggesting that authorities had doubts about the reliability of his statements.
The arguments come as jurors consider competing claims over Davis’ alleged role in the killing, which has remained one of the most closely watched unsolved cases in music history for decades.
