US President Donald Trump has said he expects the war between the United States and Iran to end “immediately after” the November midterm elections.
Trump made the remarks on Wednesday, September 9, while speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews before departing for a Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Texas.
The president accused Iran of attempting to influence the outcome of the elections by prolonging the conflict, while arguing that Tehran would not be able to withstand continued US pressure.
“I think the war is going to end immediately after the election. They can’t hold out any longer. They’re desperate to try and affect the election,” Trump said.
When asked whether formal diplomatic negotiations with Tehran could resume, Trump said a deal was no longer a priority for his administration, although he acknowledged that negotiations remained possible.
“Yes, a negotiation could possibly happen, but it’s not something we’re looking at,” he said.
Trump’s comments came amid renewed military exchanges between the United States and Iran around the Strait of Hormuz.
According to reports, Iran said it had attacked 10 commercial and naval vessels near the Strait of Hormuz after US forces destroyed five Iranian oil tankers. The latest escalation contributed to a renewed surge in global oil prices, with Brent crude rising above $100 per barrel.
The president also maintained that US forces had carried out significant attacks against Iranian targets.
“We’ve knocked out nine of their ships. I would say that the attacks are caused by us, and you’re going to see a lot more,” Trump said.
The prolonged conflict has increasingly become a political issue in the United States as voters prepare for the November 3 midterm elections. Rising energy and living costs have added to economic concerns surrounding the war.
Trump was travelling to Dallas for a Republican midterm convention as the conflict continued to dominate political discussion. The two-day gathering is aimed at mobilising Republican voters ahead of the elections.
Trump has continued to insist that the conflict will end soon after the elections, despite acknowledging that there is currently no active push by his administration to resume negotiations with Tehran.
