Larson, who caddies for American golfer Harris English, received the pardon on September 3, 2026, over his 1995 conviction for conspiracy to distribute cocaine.
According to records from the US Department of Justice, Larson was sentenced to 156 months in prison, five years of supervised release and a $25,000 fine. He ultimately served about 11 years behind bars.
His criminal record later created difficulties travelling to the UK under rules governing entry and electronic travel authorisations. The issue prevented him from accompanying English at the 2025 British Open. UK rules provide for the refusal of an ETA in certain cases involving overseas criminal convictions and custodial sentences.
English went on to finish second at the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush, behind Scottie Scheffler. The tournament’s official records confirm English’s runner-up finish.
The travel restriction also meant Larson missed the opportunity to work alongside English at the tournament and potentially earn a share of the golfer’s prize money.
Following the pardon, English welcomed the decision and said he was pleased that Larson would be able to travel with him for future tournaments in the UK.
“I’m just so pumped for Eric that he can have his rights back ... and travel to be by my side and work for me specifically at the Scottish Open and the British Open,” English said.
Larson submitted his pardon application through the US Justice Department’s clemency process before Trump granted him a full and unconditional pardon.
The pardon provides relief from the federal conviction’s legal consequences, although it does not alter the historical fact that Larson was convicted and served his sentence.
Larson said the decision had given him another opportunity to continue his career as a professional caddie.
