The lawsuit was filed on Monday, September 21, 2026, at the US District Court for the District of Columbia, with the outlets arguing that the administration violated their First Amendment rights and denied them due process.
The organisations said their journalists’ White House credentials were revoked without notice or an opportunity to challenge the decision after Trump objected to their reporting.
In a joint statement, the three outlets said they were seeking to protect their constitutional rights and the principle that the government should not determine what the press reports or publishes.
“Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists’ credentials because it objected to our reporting,” the organisations said.
They added that leaving the decision unchallenged could affect press freedom and the public’s access to independent journalism free from government interference.
Trump announced the ban on Friday, accusing CNN, MS NOW and Politico of repeatedly publishing what he described as “fiction” and “lies” about his administration.
The following day, journalists from the three organisations were denied entry to the White House, with reports that some press credentials were disabled or confiscated.
Trump later defended the decision on Truth Social, saying the White House was not conducting an “assault on the Free Press” but was instead targeting what he called “FAKE NEWS”.
The President also suggested that other media organisations could face similar restrictions, mentioning The New York Times and The Washington Post when questioned about possible additional bans.
CNN is one of the five US television news organisations participating in the White House press pool for live television coverage. The network had been scheduled to cover Trump’s trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly but was unable to fulfil the assignment following the White House decision.
