Two teenagers have drowned in a river in Askplaye community, Kaduna State, following torrential rainfall that affected parts of the state.
The victims have been identified as 19-year-old Suleiman Yakubu and 17-year-old Abubakar Mohammed.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), North-West Operations Office, Kaduna, confirmed the incident, saying the bodies of the two teenagers had yet to be recovered.
In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, NEMA said its North-West Operations Office, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) and other stakeholders, had continued to assess the flood situation following heavy rainfall that lasted for approximately four consecutive days, from Thursday to Monday, across parts of Kaduna metropolis.
The agency said its Head of Operations, Hajia Halima Suleiman, led an assessment team to communities affected by the flooding to determine the extent and impact of the floodwaters.
According to NEMA, some communities experienced flash floods that submerged roads and temporarily trapped residents in their homes.
The flooding also disrupted movement, forcing residents to navigate affected areas with caution.
NEMA said Suleiman visited the bereaved family of Yakubu to offer condolences over the loss and provide support.
The agency added that NEMA, KADSEMA and other emergency responders would continue to monitor the situation and assess the needs of affected communities to facilitate an appropriate response.
The incident comes as parts of Kaduna continue to deal with the effects of heavy rainfall and flooding, with emergency agencies urging residents in vulnerable areas to exercise caution.
