Guterres raised the alarm following a statement by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), which said there is a near 100 per cent probability that El Niño conditions will persist through February, with their climate impacts potentially extending into 2027.
“El Niño is being supersized before our eyes. The science leaves no room for doubt: the planet is in uncharted waters, and those waters are heating up,” Guterres said.
He added that rising sea surface temperatures and global temperatures were increasing the risk of extreme weather events across the world.
El Niño is a naturally occurring climate pattern associated with the warming of surface waters in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. However, climate scientists say its impacts are being intensified by global warming linked to fossil fuel emissions.
WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo warned that the strengthening phenomenon could trigger significant economic and social disruption through severe droughts, extreme heat and flooding.
She urged disaster management agencies, as well as the agriculture, energy and healthcare sectors, to strengthen preparations for heightened climate risks associated with the evolving weather pattern.
