The charges were announced in a statement issued by the US Department of Justice on Friday, September 18, 2026.
According to the department, the cases involve allegations including voting in federal elections by non-citizens, making false claims of US citizenship to register or vote, as well as other offences uncovered during investigations.
The related charges include wire fraud, naturalisation fraud, passport fraud and unlawful firearm purchases.
One of the Nigerian nationals, 67-year-old Helen Sayen Adams, was charged with voting by an alien in a federal election and making a false statement of citizenship in order to register to vote.
The Justice Department said Adams has been a lawful permanent resident of the US since May 2024.
Another Nigerian, 27-year-old Joshua Nmelichukwu Akpom, who has been a lawful permanent resident since 2016, was charged with allegedly making false statements in connection with his naturalisation process.
The third Nigerian, 56-year-old Gladys Adaeze Okafor, was previously arrested and charged with allegedly voting illegally in the 2022 elections and voting in the 2024 general election.
The Justice Department said the charges formed part of wider investigations into election-related violations across the United States.
The cases remain allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
