The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he will work to secure electoral victories for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Rivers State and Abuja during the 2027 general elections.
Wike made this known on Wednesday during a media chat in Abuja, where he also spoke about his continued political influence in Rivers State despite no longer serving as the state governor.
The former Rivers State governor said political control does not necessarily depend on holding an elected executive position.
He maintained that a politician can remain influential through strong relationships with grassroots supporters and established political structures.
Wike described himself as a major force within the political structures of Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory.
According to him, his influence in both areas remains strong and is not dependent on occupying the office of governor.
The minister said he has a responsibility to President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections and plans to use his political network in Rivers and Abuja to support the President's re-election bid.
He said his political responsibilities extend beyond Rivers State, adding that he also considers the Federal Capital Territory an important part of his political assignment.
Wike also addressed questions surrounding his regular trips to Rivers State. He dismissed suggestions that his visits meant he was neglecting his duties as FCT minister or preparing to leave Abuja permanently.
The minister explained that his continued presence in Rivers was necessary to maintain contact with members of his political camp and monitor developments within the state.
He said effective political organisation requires leaders to maintain direct contact with people on the ground rather than depending entirely on information passed through other individuals.
According to Wike, staying connected with his political supporters allows him to understand developments more clearly and make decisions based on what is happening within the political space.
