Wike made the disclosure during an interview with TVC News on Monday, while discussing the political circumstances surrounding the 2023 presidential election and the forthcoming 2027 contest.
The former Rivers State governor attributed his children’s support for Obi to the controversy surrounding the All Progressives Congress (APC) Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket during the 2023 election.
“In 2023, there was a problem with the Muslim-Muslim ticket. There was this campaign about Christianity,” Wike said.
“All my children supported Peter Obi. But now, they are saying that they never knew this man, Peter Obi, was like this.”
Wike argued that the political circumstances had since changed, claiming that President Bola Tinubu’s administration had reduced the impact of the controversy surrounding the same-faith ticket.
“There are a lot of people who were carried away, but that is no longer there now. Tinubu has been able to kill the Muslim-Muslim ticket problem,” he said.
Wike also questioned Obi’s prospects in the 2027 presidential election, arguing that the former Anambra State governor would struggle to replicate the support he received in parts of the country in 2023.
He specifically questioned how Obi would win states such as Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Delta under the current political circumstances.
Wike further argued that some of the political factors that helped Obi during the 2023 election had changed, and said Obi should prepare for the 2031 election instead.
“For this election, leave it for Tinubu. Prepare for 2031. And that’s the truth of the matter,” Wike said.
Wike’s comments come amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 presidential election and ongoing debate over alliances, regional support and the role of religion in Nigerian politics.
His assessment of Obi’s prospects and the effect of the Muslim-Muslim ticket controversy are political claims and remain matters of political debate.
