The Federal Workers Forum (FWF) has demanded an immediate review of federal civil servants’ salaries, proposing that the minimum wage be increased from N70,000 to N300,000.
In a letter dated September 2, 2026, and addressed to National Assembly, President Bola Tinubu and other top government officials, the group also proposed a maximum salary of N1.5 million for Level 17 officers.
“We call for justice and immediate wage review now, adjust the federal minimum wage to N300,000 and a maximum wage of N1.5m for the Level 17 officers,” the workers said.
According to the FWF, the N70,000 minimum wage approved in 2024 has not been fully implemented for federal workers, particularly the consequential adjustment and associated allowances.
The forum claimed that only N40,000 was added to federal workers’ salaries after the minimum wage rose from N30,000 to N70,000.
The FWF said rising costs of food, transportation, accommodation, electricity and cooking gas had made the current wage inadequate, warning that workers were struggling to survive.
“Federal workers are dying in instalments, we are suffering in silence, our salary is too poor; it is not taking us home,” the letter stated.
It also alleged that some workers had resorted to digital loan apps to fund transportation and daily needs, while others were using firewood because they could no longer afford cooking gas.
The proposed salary structure places Level 1 Step 1 at N300,000, rising to N1.5 million for Level 17 Step 1.
The forum also demanded payment of outstanding salaries, promotion arrears, 40 per cent peculiar allowance, a permanent Cost of Living Allowance, family support allowance, improved health insurance and pension benefits, among others.
“Federal workers have suffered enough. It has been three years of torture, torment and agony for the federal workers since the removal of fuel subsidy,” the group said.
