Amaechi Challenges Tinubu Over Petrol Price, Sets ₦600 Condition For Support.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his economic policies, saying he would withdraw from Atiku Abubakar’s ticket and campaign for the president if petrol sells for ₦600 per litre.

Amaechi made the statement on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, while reacting to President Tinubu’s Independence Day address in which he declared that Nigeria had entered an “age of prosperity”.

The former Rivers State governor questioned the credibility of the administration’s economic claims, arguing that many Nigerians were yet to experience a reduction in the cost of living.

“It is about believability; who do you believe? Go to the 2005 Presidential speech; it is the same: we have turned the page, and we are about to start enjoyment,” Amaechi said.

He also questioned whether transport costs and other prices had fallen, citing the cost of travelling by road between Nyanya and Abuja.

“Have you asked one of your staff who goes by transport, how much it costs from Yanya to Abuja? Has anything come down? Has any price come down, has anything changed?” he asked.

Amaechi then offered to personally verify the price of petrol at a filling station, saying he would campaign for Tinubu if the product was selling for ₦600 per litre.

“I will go tomorrow morning to the petrol station to buy fuel, I will go myself, if fuel has come down to 600, I will campaign for President Tinubu,” he said.

He further challenged those who doubted his pledge to accompany him with a camera, saying he would relinquish his position as Atiku’s running mate and support Tinubu if the price dropped to the stated level.

“If you doubt me, come with your camera to my house, and I will go to the filling station and buy fuel, and I, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi will withdraw as a vice-presidential candidate of Atiku and campaign for President Tinubu, if it has come down,” he said.

Amaechi’s remarks came amid continued political debate over the impact of the Federal Government’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of the petrol subsidy and its effect on fuel and transport costs.

Amaechi is the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on the ADC ticket ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
