Former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of taking over oil wells belonging to Cross River State during his tenure as governor of Akwa Ibom State.
Amaechi made the allegation during a political town hall meeting in Calabar, Cross River State, organised to engage voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former Minister of Transportation insisted that his comments were based on what he described as historical facts rather than political rivalry with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I am not calling Akpabio out because he is in the APC. I am calling him out because he knows that I know what he did. Tell him Amaechi says Akpabio knows what he did,” he said.
Amaechi urged residents of Cross River State to demand a formal explanation from Akpabio concerning the transfer of the disputed maritime oil assets to Akwa Ibom State.
He further alleged that Akpabio had attempted to claim oil wells belonging to Rivers State while serving as governor of Akwa Ibom, but said Rivers State successfully challenged the move in court.
The allegations formed part of Amaechi’s address to residents as political parties begin preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The ADC vice-presidential candidate also addressed questions about the failure to extend the federal railway network to Calabar during his tenure as Minister of Transportation.
He explained that an initial framework had been developed for an $11bn coastal railway project linking Lagos to Calabar, with a proposed spur to the Obudu Cattle Ranch.
However, Amaechi said the project was stalled because of severe funding constraints.
He also questioned the economic feasibility of the $16bn coastal highway project being undertaken by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, suggesting that alternative infrastructure priorities should be considered.
Amaechi’s comments come amid growing political debate over infrastructure spending, resource ownership and development priorities ahead of the 2027 elections.
