The couple appeared before the court on Friday, 16 October 2026, following allegations of repeated assaults on the child, identified as Chiziterem Frank Ozuruigbo.
Their arrest followed the circulation of photographs and videos showing the boy with severe injuries. He was reportedly rescued after neighbours in the compound where he lived with the couple raised the alarm over his condition.
According to the five-count charge, Chisom was accused of repeatedly assaulting the child and burning him with melted plastic, while her husband allegedly failed to obtain medical attention for him and kept him away from school.
In count two, the couple were jointly accused of unlawfully causing grievous harm to the boy by repeatedly beating him and applying melted plastic to his body.
In count three, Chisom was separately charged with allegedly attempting to cause the child’s death through repeated beatings and the application of melted plastic to different parts of his body, resulting in severe burns and endangering his life.
Counts four and five accused her of offensive conduct towards the child and wilfully and knowingly placing the minor in fear of physical injury.
The couple pleaded not guilty to all five counts.
Through their lawyers, they informed the court of their intention to pursue a plea bargain. The prosecution team did not oppose the request.
The case centres on allegations of severe child abuse, with the court expected to handle the proceedings in accordance with the applicable law.
