Chelsea have confirmed that goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has undergone successful surgery on a fractured jaw sustained during their 2-0 victory over Everton in the English Premier League on Saturday.
The Argentina international suffered the injury following a clash of heads with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite as the pair challenged for a cross during the encounter at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Martinez received treatment on the pitch for more than eight minutes before being carried off on a stretcher and taken to a waiting ambulance.
The goalkeeper was subsequently taken to hospital for further assessment, which confirmed the fractured jaw and the need for surgery, Chelsea said in an official statement. <Cite refs={["turn713973search0","turn713973search2"]}/>
Following the operation, Martinez shared a photograph of himself in a hospital bed on Instagram, thanking supporters for their messages and reassuring them that the procedure had gone well.
“Thank you for all the messages, the operation went well,” he wrote.
He added: “We’ll be back in a few weeks.”
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso had earlier said after the match that the goalkeeper was taken to hospital for precautionary tests following the collision.
The club subsequently confirmed the successful operation and expressed its support for the 34-year-old as he begins his recovery.
“Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has undergone successful surgery on a fractured jaw. Everyone at Chelsea wishes Emi a speedy recovery and will support him throughout,” the club said. <Cite refs={["turn713973search0","turn713973search2"]}/>
Martinez’s injury is a setback for Chelsea, who secured all three points against Everton through a 2-0 victory. The goalkeeper is expected to spend the coming weeks recovering before returning to action.
