Former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has reportedly held discussions about replacing Michael Carrick at Manchester United, outlining key conditions he wants the club’s senior leadership to accept before taking the job.
Carrick’s position at Old Trafford is said to be under increasing pressure following Manchester United’s heavy 4-1 defeat away to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The result leaves United with just two victories from their opening 11 matches across all competitions this season.
Although Carrick is expected to remain in charge for Sunday’s Premier League home fixture against Bournemouth, another convincing defeat could put the future of the 45-year-old manager in serious doubt.
According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Conte is open to returning to the Premier League and taking charge of the English club.
However, the Italian tactician has reportedly made his demands clear during discussions with United executives, insisting on full control over player recruitment as part of plans to strengthen the squad.
Conte is said to want authority over transfer decisions during the January window and next summer’s transfer window to improve the squad’s depth and competitiveness.
The former Chelsea boss has also reportedly demanded complete control over the appointment of his backroom staff, allowing him to bring in his preferred coaching team.
The reported discussions come amid uncertainty surrounding Carrick’s future, with Manchester United facing mounting pressure to improve their results.
Conte, who previously managed Chelsea, has extensive experience in the Premier League and is known for demanding significant involvement in squad-building and team operations.
However, no official appointment has been announced, and Carrick remains the focus of attention ahead of United’s next league fixture.
