Former Super Eagles forward Peter Osaze Odemwingie has criticised Odion Ighalo for advising Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen to consider a move to the Saudi Pro League during his prime years.
Ighalo had previously suggested that Osimhen could accept lucrative offers from Saudi Arabian clubs, including Al-Hilal, and secure his financial future before returning to European football later in his career.
Osimhen ultimately opted to remain in Europe, joining Galatasaray on a permanent deal.
Speaking on the Rash4Christ Podcast alongside Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Odemwingie questioned the wisdom of prioritising financial rewards over sporting ambition while a player remains at the peak of his career.
“Go there at the right time, but if you can play in Europe, it’s a joke to go somewhere else,” Odemwingie said.
“I understand what he’s trying to say, that titles won’t feed his family, but he’s still earning decent money in Europe.
“Encouraging someone in his prime to just go for money is foolishness. Top players in the head don’t think that way.”
Odemwingie’s comments come amid an ongoing debate among footballers and fans over whether players should prioritise elite competition in Europe or accept the financial opportunities available in the Saudi Pro League.
Osimhen, who had attracted significant interest from Saudi Arabia, eventually chose to continue his career in European football with Galatasaray.
