Former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn.
Flynn, a former music pastor who appeared on American Idol in 2013, was sentenced on Monday, October 5, 2026, following his conviction in Ohio.
A jury had found the 40-year-old guilty of aggravated murder and other charges, including murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence, after prosecutors argued that he staged a fake home invasion to conceal the killing.
Prosecutors alleged that Flynn shot Ashley twice in the head while she was sleeping and attempted to make the incident appear as though an intruder had entered their home.
The prosecution also presented evidence concerning Flynn’s relationship with another woman and messages exchanged between them before Ashley’s death.
One message sent by Flynn the night before the killing reportedly read: “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow.”
Flynn broke down in tears during the proceedings and addressed his two daughters, who were in the home when their mother was killed.
Despite the conviction, Flynn maintained his innocence during his sentencing hearing, although he expressed remorse and apologised to his family.
The judge sentenced him to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, citing what the court described as the seriousness and cruelty of his actions.
Ashley, 37, was remembered as a mother, teacher and volleyball coach whose death left her family and community devastated.
Flynn had previously appeared on American Idol during the 2013 season, where he spoke warmly about Ashley and credited her with encouraging him to pursue his musical ambitions.
His defence team has indicated that an appeal is likely.
