Dr Taiwo Fasoranti, the eldest son of the late Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, has revealed that his father often told the family about a covenant he had with God to die at the age of 100.
Taiwo, who serves as the Secretary to the Ondo State Government, made the disclosure on Tuesday night when Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa visited the family to offer his condolences at their residence in Akure.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Pa Fasoranti died on Tuesday evening at his residence in Ijapo, Akure, at the age of 100.
According to his son, the late elder statesman had repeatedly told members of his family that he believed he would leave the world after attaining the age of 100. He also instructed them not to mourn him when he eventually died.
Taiwo said the family was choosing to celebrate his father's life rather than grieve over his death, noting that the late Afenifere leader had left behind a legacy that would be difficult to match.
He described his father as a man whose life was marked by determination, resilience, hard work and love for others. He added that the family was grateful to God for the values the deceased passed on to them.
The Ondo State SSG also spoke about his father's role in raising and educating his children, describing him as a devoted parent who took an active interest in their upbringing.
He said the family would miss the late elder statesman's guidance and wise counsel, recalling that he was a man who spoke little but communicated his thoughts effectively.
Taiwo expressed appreciation to Governor Aiyedatiwa for visiting the family during the period of grief. He also appealed to Nigerians to pray for the family and support them as they work to preserve the values and legacy their father left behind.
During the visit, Aiyedatiwa described the late Afenifere leader as a man known for humility, kindness and wisdom, adding that his contributions to governance and national development would remain part of Nigeria's history.
The governor noted that Pa Fasoranti continued to influence government decisions even at an advanced age, which he said showed that the elder statesman remained mentally alert.
Aiyedatiwa also praised the deceased for his contributions to education, saying his positive influence had reached several generations and produced prominent individuals both within Nigeria and abroad.
He said the life of the late nationalist was worth celebrating because of his dedication to humanity and the positive impact he made on society.
The governor urged the Fasoranti family and Nigerians in general to uphold the virtues the deceased represented, including humility, kindness, wisdom and commitment to public service.
He added that the late Afenifere leader's life should inspire others to contribute to the development of their communities and the country at large.
Pa Fasoranti was a respected Yoruba leader and nationalist whose activities in public life earned him recognition across the country. His death at the age of 100 marks the end of a long life associated with leadership, public service and the promotion of Yoruba interests.
