Kenyan presidential candidate Patrick Osoi has warned Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote against rushing to establish a refinery in Kenya, saying he would prioritise local businesses if elected president.
Osoi made the remarks during a campaign event, where he argued that Kenya had the facilities and local entrepreneurs needed to undertake refinery projects without relying on foreign investors.
He claimed that, if elected, his administration would have the capacity to manage the country’s refinery operations and support domestic businesses.
“I want to tell Dangote, please don’t hurry up to start the refinery because by next year February, the time I’m sworn in as the president of this country, you’ll be back going to Nigeria,” he said.
The presidential hopeful further argued that Kenya already had refinery facilities capable of handling the proposed operations.
“We have refinery which can do that job. We also have business people in this country who can do that job,” he added.
Osoi maintained that supporting Kenyan entrepreneurs and strengthening local industries would be among his priorities if he secured victory in the presidential election.
His comments come amid discussions about Dangote’s potential expansion into Kenya’s petroleum sector, although the claims about Kenya’s existing refinery capacity and the proposed project were not independently established in the account.
