Nigerian media personality and disc jockey DJ DSF has sparked debate about parenting and financial responsibility after arguing that people who cannot afford to raise children should reconsider having them.
She shared her views during an appearance on the My Unpopular Opinion podcast, where she said having children without the financial means to provide for them could place an unfair burden on the children, their parents and other family members.
“My unpopular opinion is broke people shouldn't have kids. I don't think it's fair to the children. It's not fair to the family. It's not fair to yourself,” she said.
Using the experience of a cousin with five children as an example, DSF questioned why someone already struggling financially would continue to have more children without a clear means of supporting them.
“I have a cousin that has five kids, and she's been broke since she had the first one. Why do you have five? Every other week it's, ‘Oh, can I have money for school fees? I don't have money to feed this one,’” she said.
During the discussion, one of the interviewers argued that some successful people had emerged from difficult financial backgrounds.
However, DSF questioned why parents would deliberately want their children to experience similar hardship when they could consider their financial circumstances before starting a family.
“I was birthed into a struggle. Why would I want my kids to be birthed into a struggle? I had to fight. Do I want my kids to fight?” she asked.
The conversation also explored differing views on whether growing up in difficult circumstances builds resilience or exposes children to avoidable hardship.
DSF’s comments have brought renewed attention to the relationship between financial stability, family planning and the responsibilities associated with raising children.
