Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, has expressed his desire to rebuild his broken relationships with his father, King Charles III, and his elder brother, Prince William, saying he believes reconciliation is important despite the challenges facing the world.
Harry made this known during an interview with GQ magazine in New York, which was released on Tuesday. He said he remained hopeful that the long-running disagreement within the British royal family could be resolved, even though some people might not support efforts to bring the family together.
The Duke said he wanted the family to settle their differences and move forward, adding that making peace with loved ones was important at a time when the world was dealing with several challenges.
Harry also spoke about the need to move beyond painful experiences, explaining that although past events could leave lasting emotional scars, people could choose how they responded to them. He encouraged people to let go of past hurts rather than allow them to continue affecting their lives.
According to him, changing one's mindset and learning to see difficult experiences differently could help people move forward, even when the memories of those experiences remained.
The prince also acknowledged that his family disagreements had attracted considerable public attention over the years. He noted that many people could relate to the problems because disagreements between siblings and strained relationships between parents and their children were common experiences.
Harry said he regularly encountered people who spoke to him about similar family challenges, including situations where children had broken relationships with one or both parents.
The Duke also explained why spending more time in the United Kingdom had become important to him, particularly for the benefit of his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
He said the opportunity for his children to experience life in Britain and attend school there meant more to him than he had initially realised.
Harry added that his children were enjoying the experience and that being exposed to a different environment was giving them a new perspective on life.
He also expressed a desire to spend more time in his home country and remain closer to members of his family, rather than visiting Britain only for a few days or a week at a time.
The Duke further provided an update on King Charles's health following the monarch's cancer treatment, indicating that his father was recovering.
Harry also reflected on the death of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.
He explained that he had gradually found a way to keep her memory alive through his work without allowing grief to weigh him down or prevent him from moving forward.
Harry said he was now able to carry his mother's memory with him and use it as part of his life's journey, rather than remain trapped in the pain of losing her.
The prince also dismissed the idea that he wanted public sympathy because of his personal struggles. He pointed out that he had access to a support network and had undergone different forms of therapy to help him deal with difficult experiences.
Harry said he had made efforts to work through his challenges and believed his life could have taken a different direction if he had not sought help.
The Duke and his wife, Meghan Markle, moved from the United Kingdom to the United States in 2020 after stepping away from their duties as working members of the British royal family.
Their decision to leave their royal roles deepened tensions between Harry and other members of the family, particularly his father and brother.
The family disagreements later received further public attention following the release of Harry's memoir, Spare, in 2023. In the book, he shared details about his strained relationships with members of the royal family and described several disagreements with Prince William.
Since then, there has been little public indication that Harry and William have made progress towards repairing their relationship.
