Reno Omokri Tackles Peter Okoye Over Support For Peter Obi Ahead Of 2027 Polls.

Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has criticised Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, over his support for former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Okoye had campaigned for Obi during the 2023 presidential election, urging Nigerians to move away from older politicians and support a younger candidate.

In a video shared on social media at the time, the singer appealed to voters to retire older political leaders, arguing that the country needed younger leadership.

Reacting to the campaign message in a post shared on Sunday, Omokri questioned the use of age as a basis for choosing political leaders, arguing that the ages of Obi and his prospective running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, compared with those of President Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima, challenged Okoye’s argument.

Omokri noted that Obi was 65 and Kwankwaso would turn 70 in October, while Tinubu was 74 and Shettima was 60.

Using the combined ages of the two politicians on each ticket, he argued that the average age of Tinubu and Shettima was 67, compared with 67.5 for Obi and Kwankwaso.

He also compared the figures with those of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, whose combined average age he put at 70.

In his post, titled The Age Factor: Why Peter Okoye Is Really Asking You to Vote for President Tinubu, Omokri argued that, by Okoye’s age-based reasoning, the Tinubu-Shettima ticket should also be considered.

Beyond the age argument, Omokri defended Tinubu’s record as governor of Lagos State, claiming that the administration’s investments in infrastructure helped transform the state and supported its economic growth.

He recalled that Peter and his twin brother, Paul Okoye, began their music careers in Jos, Plateau State, before moving to Abuja and later Lagos, where they achieved wider success.

Omokri attributed part of their success to the development of Lagos under Tinubu’s administration.

He also listed several schools and independent power projects that he said were established through the Lagos State Government under Tinubu, challenging Okoye to identify comparable projects initiated, completed and commissioned with government funds during Obi’s tenure as governor of Anambra State.

“If Peter Obi's record in office was so exemplary that it merits his votes and the endorsement of Nigerians, then why are Peter Obi and Peter Okoye, along with their families, living in the Lagos that President Bola Tinubu and his predecessors built, rather than living in Anambra that Peter Obi turned into heaven?” Omokri asked.

He further argued that Tinubu’s administration had taken steps to address challenges affecting young Nigerians, citing the absence of a nationwide strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) since the current administration took office and the provision of student loans through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

Omokri maintained that voters should assess political candidates based on their records in office as well as their age.

The exchange adds to the political debate surrounding the 2027 elections, with public figures expressing differing views on leadership, governance and the performance of political officeholders.
