Nollywood actress Ruth Kadiri-Ezerika has warned that the pressure to organise elaborate weddings can place unnecessary strain on couples and their marriages, urging intending couples to consider simpler ceremonies.
The actress said many couples put themselves under financial and emotional pressure to host big weddings, arguing that the expectations surrounding such events could affect their relationships.
She noted that some couples organise several ceremonies, including engagement parties, traditional weddings, court weddings and church weddings, which can increase expenses and create additional pressure.
According to Kadiri, couples can avoid some of these challenges by opting for intimate ceremonies attended by a few close family members and friends.
The actress said she had a small wedding and remained married after seven years, contrasting her experience with cases where couples who organised elaborate celebrations separated shortly after getting married.
She attributed the success of her marriage, in part, to the decision to keep her wedding simple, considering the demands of her career.
Kadiri also made claims about spiritual factors and infertility, suggesting that some couples might experience fertility challenges because of what she alleged could happen spiritually during elaborate wedding ceremonies. However, she provided no evidence to support the claim.
Beyond marriage, the actress spoke against the pressure society places on people to achieve financial success, particularly first-born children who are often expected to support their families.
She urged parents to avoid placing excessive expectations on their children to become financially successful or start bringing money home.
Kadiri argued that people should be allowed to define success according to their own values and circumstances rather than conforming to society’s expectations.
She said success could mean different things to different people, adding that for some, a fulfilling life might simply involve resting, spending time with their children and enjoying family life without the pressure to pursue constant financial achievement.
The actress maintained that society’s expectations around success needed to change, warning that the pressure was taking a toll on many people’s wellbeing.
