The Borno State Police Command has arrested six suspects over the theft of a mobile phone and the alleged unlawful withdrawal of ₦5.65 million from the victim’s bank account.
The command also announced the recovery of the stolen phone and the full amount withdrawn from the account.
The police spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.
According to the command, the incident occurred at about 9am on 13 October when a resident, identified as Abba K., of Damboa Road, Maiduguri, boarded a commercial tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP.
Daso said the victim discovered after alighting that his Infinix Smart 8 mobile phone was missing from his pocket.
He reported the incident to the police, prompting the Commissioner of Police to direct operatives of the Command’s VCRU Unit, known as Crack, to begin an investigation.
“Through diligent investigation, digital forensic analysis and intelligence gathering, the operatives successfully apprehended six suspects allegedly connected to the crime,” the statement said.
According to the command, the suspects allegedly confessed to their involvement in the phone theft and the subsequent withdrawal of ₦5.65 million from the victim’s bank account.
“The suspects further disclosed that the money was shared among themselves,” the statement added.
The police said both the stolen phone and the ₦5.65 million had been recovered.
The command added that the case would be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
