Wike Blasts Amaechi Over Claim Tinubu’s Policies Contributed To Mother’s Death.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticised former Rivers State governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, over his claim that President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies contributed to the death of his mother.

Amaechi made the claim during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, saying the rising cost of medicines under the Tinubu administration had made it difficult for his family to afford the drugs his mother needed before her death.

Wike, who spoke on Saturday during an engagement with leaders and stakeholders in Rivers State, accused Amaechi of bringing his late mother into political arguments.

The FCT minister said he found it disturbing that Amaechi would link his mother’s death and her memory to political discussions.

“It is unfortunate. I thought, for whatever reason, that we must respect our parents. For anyone who watched the TV last night where somebody was using his own mother to place politics, your mother that we thought should be resting peacefully,” Wike said.

He also referred to Amaechi’s statement that his late mother would be happy if the ADC won the 2027 election, questioning why the deceased should be brought into the political contest.

“How dare you bring a loved one who's not alive into politics?” Wike asked.

Wike further challenged Amaechi’s claim that the economic situation had prevented him from buying medication for his mother, pointing to the former governor’s previous positions in public office.

He noted that Amaechi served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2007, governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015 and Minister of Transportation from 2015 to 2023.

“And your mother was sick, and you are telling the world that because of the policy of Tinubu, you couldn’t buy drugs for your mother and so your mother died,” Wike said.

The FCT minister also questioned why Amaechi could not have sought assistance from friends, relatives or other associates if he was unable to meet his mother’s medical expenses.

Wike referred to Amaechi’s description of his wife as an industrialist and asked why she could not have assisted with the purchase of the medication.

He also pointed to the prominent individuals who attended Amaechi’s mother’s burial, saying some of them could have provided financial assistance while she was alive.

“It is very unfortunate that people can descend so low to use your mother to play politics. And you say that's a good son? Wherever his mother is, can she be happy? She cannot be happy!” Wike said.

Amaechi had said during his Channels Television interview that the economic policies introduced by the Tinubu administration had made healthcare increasingly difficult to afford, arguing that the situation affected his family and many other Nigerians.

The exchange is the latest in the long-running political rivalry between Wike and Amaechi, who previously served in Rivers State politics before becoming political opponents.
