‘You Will Be Monitored’: CJN Cautions Judges Ahead Of 2027 Election Tribunals.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has warned judges who may serve on election petition tribunals ahead of the 2027 general elections to avoid political activities and maintain strict impartiality.

Kekere-Ekun gave the warning on Wednesday during the flag-off of the 2026/2027 legal year of the National Industrial Court in Abuja.

She explained that judges of the National Industrial Court could be appointed to serve on election petition tribunals in accordance with the legal framework governing the 2027 elections.

The CJN stressed that election disputes often attract significant political interest and public attention, requiring judges to maintain high standards of conduct.

She urged the judges to be mindful of their relationships, public appearances and actions to protect the integrity of the judiciary.

According to her, judges assigned to election petition tribunals would be closely monitored as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

“You will be monitored,” she warned.

Kekere-Ekun noted that judges serving on the tribunals would be expected to handle politically sensitive disputes fairly and without bias.

She added that their conduct would be particularly important in maintaining public confidence in the judiciary during the electoral period.
