The Lagos State Police Command has uncovered an indoor cannabis cultivation operation concealed within a residential property in the state, in what it described as a major breakthrough in the fight against drug-related offences.
Footage from the police operation showed a room allegedly converted into a cannabis-growing facility, where the plants were cultivated in cups under a controlled environment. The plants were reportedly expected to take at least three months to mature before harvesting and eventual sale.
A man linked to the property told investigators that he had allowed a foreign national, who was allegedly facing difficulties in Nigeria, to use the room after offering to assist him in returning to his home country.
He claimed that the idea of growing cannabis originated from the foreign national, maintaining that he had no intention of making financial gains from the arrangement.
According to the man, he only permitted the individual to use the space out of a desire to help him. He further alleged that the operation came to light after the foreign national attempted to sell the cultivated cannabis plants.
Reacting to the discovery, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police described the operation as another significant achievement in the command's ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse, cultivation and trafficking.
The police command subsequently called on residents to remain vigilant and pay attention to activities within their communities, urging them to promptly report suspicious movements and operations to the relevant authorities.
