The community of Ikot Ebo Ikono, situated in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, rallied together yesterday to show their unwavering support for their newly inaugurated village head, Eteidung Samuel Moses Udo. The vibrant capping ceremony took place at the Uyo Traditional Rulers Council, located at Wellington Bassey Way in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state. The event drew a significant turnout, with sons, daughters, women, and children of Ikot Ebo Ikono gathering to witness the historic occasion.
Leading
the ceremony was the Paramount ruler of Uyo, His Majesty Sylvanus Effiong Okon,
who, in his address, emphasized the crucial role of the newly elected village
heads in fostering peace and unity within their communities. He urged them to
serve as ambassadors and promoters of harmony, transcending any past divisions
within the community.
In
addition to the induction of Eteidung Samuel Moses Udo, two other village heads
were also formally recognized and welcomed into the esteemed council of village
heads in Uyo. These distinguished individuals hail from Ikot Ebido and Ikot
Inyang Idung in Oku and Etoi clans, respectively. Speaking on behalf of the
newly inducted village heads, Eteidung Ini Ekong Ebong, the village head of
Ikot Ebido, expressed gratitude to His Majesty for his support and guidance,
pledging to implement the counsel provided for the betterment of their
respective villages.
According
to the established local government and chieftaincy laws governing villages in
Akwa Ibom State, the appointment of village heads rests with the family heads.
In the case of Ikot Ebo Ikono Village, comprising four families (Ekpuk), namely
Nnung Ebo, Nnung Iti, Nnung Itam, and Nnung Ayan, the selection process
initially resulted in a tie at the village council level. Consequently, the
final decision was made through an election at the Uyo traditional rulers
council, where Eteidung Samuel Udo emerged victorious with four votes against
Chief Anthony Akpan's two votes, securing his position as the elected village head.
At
the reception held in his honor at his compound in Ikot Ebo Ikono, Eteidung
Samuel Moses Udo extended heartfelt appreciation to the community members,
family heads, women, youth, and his immediate family for their unwavering
support throughout the election process. He extended an olive branch to all,
urging for reconciliation and collaboration in building a peaceful and
prosperous community, aptly dubbing the moment as "Peace has returned to
Ikot Ebo."
Wasting
no time, Eteidung Udo swiftly made interim appointments to facilitate the
smooth functioning of his administration. Among these appointments were Obong
Mbuk Inwang as Acting Chairman of Ikot Ebo Village Council, Mr. Udeme Smith as
Acting Secretary of Ikot Ebo Village Council, and Mrs. Affiong Job Ndah as
Acting Women Leader of Ikot Ebo Village Council, Mr. Uduak Inwang (Cavil),
Adviser, Ikot Ebo Village Council, Comrade Mike Ekott, Member, Ikot Ebo Village
Council, Mr. Uto Emmanuel Oton, Youth President, Ikot Ebo Village, Pastor Ifiok
Udo, Member, Ikot Ebo Village Council.
The
occasion was graced by distinguished sons and daughters of Ikono, including
Chief Clement Ekott, Former Chairman and Chairman of the Chairmen forum, Uyo
LGA, and Obong Samuel Edet, Family Head of Nnung Itam in Ikot Ebo Village, Mr.
Ubong Enefiok Eron aka Oberon Aroy, alongside numerous others who came to
celebrate this significant milestone in the community's history.
