Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has made a personal appeal to the Yoruba ethnic group, urging them to support his presidential ambition in the 2027 election, while pointing to his deep-rooted personal and family ties to the South-West.
In a statement released by his media consultant, Kola Johnson, Atiku referred to his first marriage in the 1970s to Titi, a Yoruba woman from Ijesha.
He stressed that the marriage, which resulted in four children, has established what he described as a “genetic bond of a family” between himself and the Yoruba people.
He said, “My children with Titi sometimes call me ‘Baba Rere’, meaning good father. I am extremely in love with my children and serve as a good father to them, as I urge every father to do the same to their children.”
He referred to his wife from Ijesha as his “Jewel of Inestimable Value” and affirmed that the Yoruba have always been among his most trusted friends and political companions.
Atiku gave his assurance that if he is elected as president, the interests of the South-West would be prioritised in both his policies and approach to governance.
He also addressed concerns regarding a potential “Hausa/Fulani domination,” describing such fears as “absolutely unfounded.”
He added, “Anyone who knows me will tell you with all sincerity that as a person, I am naturally a highly detribalised person. Even before I could ever venture into politics, I flowed easily and effortlessly with people of diverse tribes, ethnicity, religion, and whatever sectarian differences.”
Atiku is currently leading the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition in a bid to remove President Bola Tinubu—who is of Yoruba origin from the South-West—from office in the 2027 presidential election.
