Benue State Government has reported a total of 243 suspected Lassa fever cases since the beginning of January 2025, with 13 recorded fatalities.
State Epidemiologist, Dr Asema Msuega, who shared the latest update, revealed that 18 of the reported cases had been confirmed through laboratory testing.
He explained, “Of the deaths, five were from confirmed cases while eight were classified as probable. Probable deaths are those of persons suspected to have Lassa fever who died before samples could be taken.”
Dr Msuega also mentioned that among the deceased was a health professional.
He disclosed that, in August 2025, the State Ministry of Health collaborated with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to introduce a community-focused intervention programme targeting Lassa fever high-risk areas, to contain the disease's spread.
According to him, the initiative concentrated on controlling rodent populations, improving sanitation, and conducting community-wide clean-up efforts.
The programme further involved sensitising residents and equipping healthcare workers with training on proper case handling and appropriate referral systems.
