Confusion Surrounds Leaked Memo On Dismissal Of Dangote Refinery Workers.

Tension is rising within Nigeria’s oil and gas industry following the emergence of a leaked memo suggesting that the management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery has dismissed all its workers for allegedly joining the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

The leaked memo, which was seen and also circulated on X by political commentator Imran Wakili, was addressed to all staff of the 650,000 barrels per day refinery.

The memo, which bore the signature of Femi Adekunle, Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management, stated that the action was taken as a “total reorganisation” in response to “recent cases of reported sabotage in different units of the petroleum refinery leading to major safety concerns”.

It further stated that the refinery is “constrained to carry out a total reorganisation of the plant.”

“As a consequence of this development, we wish to inform you that your services are no longer required, with effect from the eve of Thursday, the 25th of September, 2025.

“Please surrender all the Company’s properties in your possession to your line manager and obtain an exit clearance accordingly, but the date for doing so will be communicated to you later.

“The Finance Department, by a copy of this letter, is advised to compute all your benefits and entitlements in line with your terms of employment and conditions of service and pay the amount due to you (less all indebtedness), subject to the condition that you have obtained the exit clearance certificate as mentioned above,” the memo continued.

Wakili alleged in his X post that the memo was issued less than 24 hours after 90 per cent of the workers joined PENGASSAN.

It was also reported that Dangote Refinery and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) are currently in a dispute regarding the direct distribution of fuel nationwide.

In response to the development, Festus Osifo, the President of PENGASSAN and the President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), confirmed the incident but expressed confidence that the decision would be reversed.

“Yes, it is true. We saw the letter late last night (Wednesday).

“I can assure you that they will recall all of them,” he said.

As at the time of this report, Dangote Refinery has not issued any official statement either confirming or denying the contents of the memo.
