The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has offered a reward of up to $10,000 (approximately ₦14 million) for details that could lead to the apprehension and conviction of a Nigerian citizen, Olumide Adebiyi Adediran, who has evaded authorities for more than twenty years.
Adediran disappeared from the Central District of Illinois towards the end of December 2001, just before the start of his federal court trial.
He was due to face several charges, including Bank Fraud, Identification Document Fraud, and Credit Card Fraud.
In a post made on its official X account (formerly Twitter), the Bureau stated, “The FBI offers a reward of up to $10,000 for info leading to the arrest and conviction of Olumide Adebiyi Adediran, wanted for Violation of Conditions of Release. Adediran fled the Central District of Illinois at the end of December of 2001, shortly before his trial was set to begin on federal charges of Bank Fraud, Identification Document Fraud, and Credit Card Fraud.”
Details listed on the FBI’s official website show that Adediran is being sought in connection with a Violation of the Conditions of Release.
The FBI claims that, in August 2001, he visited a bank in Champaign, Illinois, and tried to withdraw funds using a counterfeit cheque he had previously deposited.
It is also alleged that he made use of stolen personal information belonging to United States citizens to open both bank and credit accounts.
By fleeing just days ahead of his scheduled court appearance, Adediran breached the conditions of his release and became a fugitive. On 2nd January 2002, a federal warrant for his arrest was issued by the United States District Court, Central District of Illinois, Urbana, on the charge of Violation of Conditions of Release.
