Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf, the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has ordered the release of 35 pre-trial detainees from two correctional facilities located in Keffi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State.
The chief judge granted the release during his visit to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi on Tuesday.
Of the 35 inmates freed, 33 were men and two were women.
Justice Baba-Yusuf explained that the purpose of the visit was to identify and release individuals who should not be incarcerated.
“There are a lot of people who shouldn’t be here in the first place.”
“This visit is to ensure that people who have no business being here are not kept behind doors, not even for one day. That is what we have done.”
“Today we have been able to set free 35 people who have no business being here, and that is a huge boost,” he said.
He noted that such visits would be conducted regularly to prevent unnecessary detention of individuals who should not be in custody.
“I have also given a directive to the Director in charge of the magistrates to do oversight functions on some of these courts whenever their matters come to the courts so that we ensure that the proceedings of the courts run smoothly,” he said.
He further stated that magistrates within FCT courts have been urged to improve case handling processes, to ensure quick dispensation of justice, so inmates are not left in uncertainty.
Meanwhile, Miss Cynthia Onyeka, a Programme Officer at the Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC), a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), commended the Chief Judge for personally taking time to visit the correctional facilities.
