FG Raises Concern Over Fake AI-Generated Ad Featuring President Tinubu.

Tinubu.

The Federal Government has issued a warning to the public regarding a fake, AI-generated advertisement featuring President Bola Tinubu that is currently circulating on Facebook.

It clarified that the advert, which falsely claimed to promote investment in a Ponzi scheme, was not approved by the President or by the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, ARCON.

ARCON is an agency operating under the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation.

In a statement signed by the Director-General of ARCON, Dr Olalekan Fadolapo, the dangers of misinformation were outlined: “This is to inform the general public to beware of a fake AI-generated advertisement using the image and video of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in soliciting for investment in a Ponzi scheme.”

While calling on media proprietors and the general public to remain cautious, the government added: “The violation of the requisite provisions of Act No. 23 of 2022 will attract sanctions in accordance with the law.”

ARCON confirmed that the advertisement was never submitted for vetting and was not granted approval for broadcast or publication.

The agency reaffirmed its dedication to promoting an ethical advertising space that protects consumers, and it urged all stakeholders to adhere to the principles of honest and responsible advertising.

It should be noted that similar incidents have previously occurred involving computer-generated images and voices of Pastor Enoch Adeboye and Mr Seun Okinbaloye.

These were misused for fraudulent purposes, including the promotion of fake treatments for prostatitis and erectile dysfunction.

Likewise, scams involving the Nigeria Customs Service’s seized vehicles and bags of rice, which were allegedly linked to fraudulent auction promotions, also targeted unsuspecting Nigerians.
